Reconnect With Your Younger Self: A Happiness Tip

If you’re searching for a quick way to boost your personal happiness, try taking a moment to reconnect with your younger self.

So often as adults, we hustle through our days working, taking care of other people, and running errands necessary to sustain life. We become so busy that we forget to stop and question why we do these things. Without questioning why, we sometimes quit thinking and move through our days doing the same things over and over. We create habits and routines. These habits and routines help us find a groove, and life feels easier. Over time, though, our groove becomes deeper and deeper. Before we have even realized it, we’re in a rut.

The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine. After many years of work together, she and her business partner decided to go separate ways. Unfortunately, her unattended groove had turned into more of a ravine than a rut. The stress from the dissolution of her business left her wondering if she should go back to school and change business industries.

These questions, this uncertainty leave you feeling like a small raft lost in the ocean. I know because I’ve been there. Last year at this time, after a 15-year break, I returned to writing. After months of feeling like I had too much free time on my hands and I needed to do more, I created my website.

Why did I create a website with a goal of posting one informational article a day for an entire year? Because that’s what teenage me would have done. Teenage me loved learning new things, writing, and telling people what to do (not necessarily in that order), so the website creation was a good fit.

When you reconnect with your younger self, you can remember what you used to love back when the world was your oyster. Rediscovering your passions and interests can help you make decisions about how you should proceed in life. Perhaps letting your younger self weigh in on decisions about your future will lead you down a more fun, more fulfilling path. Here are my suggestions for how to connect with your younger self.

Ways to Reconnect

Sometimes it’s hard to remember how you were way back when. If you can’t remember your younger you, call your best friend from back then. He or she should be able to help.

Ultimately, we are the only ones who can truly take care of ourselves and know ourselves. However, if you feel lost, your old best friend can probably help set you straight. If that person is not available, here are some suggestions to help you reconnect with your younger self.

  • Drag out the yearbooks and photo albums.
  • Talk to old friends.
  • Listen to songs you loved from a time in your life when you felt confident.
  • Watch your favorite old movies or TV shows.
  • If you have kids, play with them. Make sure to let them lead.
  • Take a class and learn something new.
  • Rekindle an old passion. Revisit whatever sport or hobby you liked best when you were younger.

Hopefully, these tips will help you reconnect with your younger self and lead you in the right direction. I personally believe that by following your instincts and listening to your true self, you will automatically steer yourself the right way. As you work to create a new path, remember to breathe and keep an open mind. Most importantly, remember the Rolling Stones. “You can’t always get what you want/But if you try sometime you find/You get what you need.”
