Invest in Yourself and Build Your Confidence

confident manConfidence controls many outcomes in your life. It influences your popularity among peers, the likelihood of your success, and even your ability to find a mate. Having confidence can make the world your oyster. However, for some people, building confidence is a challenge.

With the beginning of school around the corner, I decided this would be a great time to do a series on building confidence. This whole week will be dedicated to this topic. Today’s tip and, in my opinion, the most important is to invest in yourself.

Invest in Yourself

The first step that you should take to build your confidence is to invest in yourself. Normally, when we think of investments, we think of money. You invest some money and, if you’ve made good decisions, you make money.

Personal investment works much the same way. You will find that as you give yourself something, you can turn it into something greater.

I do want to make the point though, that investing in yourself doesn’t actually take any money. You can be flat broke and still invest in yourself successfully.

Ways I Invest in Myself

I should let you know upfront that I was blessed with parents who thought I was the stars in the sky. With their belief, I never thought otherwise. I mention this because it’s so much easier to be a confident person when you come from loving parents who think you’re awesome. My entire life, I have been supported and encouraged by those around me.

However, there are those who haven’t. There are those who come from trauma and abuse, and they feel like they are absolutely on their own. Yes, it’s easy to think She had it so good, and I had it so bad. I don’t think I can do this. But you can! The truth is that the strength to build confidence lies within each one of us individually.

3 Ways to Invest in Yourself

That being said, here are some ways you can invest in yourself without spending a dime.

  • Always read and learn. It doesn’t matter if you’re learning about something that interests you or a skill you can use. Always have a book that you’re reading and a reason for reading it.
  • Give yourself a compliment at the beginning of every day. Literally. Out loud. If you have a hard time finding nice things to say about yourself, start small. These don’t have to be profound compliments. You can compliment your physical appearance or your excellent dinner you made last night. Start a list of compliments you might give yourself, and add to it constantly. You never know when you may get hit with a day where you can’t think of anything nice to say to yourself. When this day comes, break out your list and read the whole thing out loud to yourself.
  • Care for yourself. When I was in high school, I danced. With various types of dance and practice almost every night of the week, I felt drained by the time I even thought of doing school work. To perk myself up, I would get cleaned up, and then take care of my feet. I would carefully dry dead skin, trim the nails and cuticles, then lotion them up. Taking the time to care for myself really made me feel better, and it gave me the energy to keep working. Truthfully, I still do this now. It’s not weird for me to take 10 or 15 minutes in the middle of writing to tend to my feet.

Neel Burton’s Suggestions for How to Invest in Yourself

In his article for Psychology Today, Neel Burton, M.D. shares some great advice for how to build confidence and self-esteem. As I read his article, I couldn’t help but notice that many of his tips are also suggestions for how you can invest in yourself. Here are my 5 favorite tips of the 17 listed.

  • Make two lists: one of your strengths and one of your achievements. Try to get a supportive friend or relative to help you with these lists, as people with depression are not usually in the most objective frame of mind. Keep the lists in a safe place and read through them every morning.
  • Think positively about yourself. Remind yourself that, despite your problems, you are a unique, special, and valuable person, and that you deserve to feel good about yourself.
  • Pay special attention to your personal hygiene. Take a shower, brush your hair, trim your nails, and so on.
  • Eat good food as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Make meals a special time, even if you are eating alone. Turn off the TV, set the table, light a candle, and make a moment to feel grateful.
  • Do more of the things that you enjoy. Go ahead and spoil yourself. Do at least one thing that you enjoy every day.
