Have a Plan: A Tip from a Happiness Coach

Each month, I share a different tip for happiness. Previous months topics have been:  have friend time, do something you don’t want to do, listen, purge, and cultivate energizing relationships. This month is a little different, though. Today’s happiness tip comes directly from the popular kids TV show, Phineas and Ferb.

“I Know What We’re Gonna Do Today!”

Several years ago, I started watching Phineas and Ferb with my oldest child. Immediately, I fell in love with the show for two reasons. First, it is a kid-friendly cartoon with elevated humor. Second, the main characters are two boys who are best friends/step-brothers. Normally, only Phineas speaks, and, at some point in each episode, he says, “I know what we’re gonna do today!” The boys then proceed to gather their friends and do the most amazing thing you can think of.

Build a roller coaster through their city? Done. Reunite their mom’s favorite band? Check. Create the town’s most popular day spa in their back yard? Yes. Give a monkey a shower? Totally.

Basically, if you can think of something completely fun and awesome, they’ve done it.

Learning from Kids TV

Normally, when a kids TV show wants to prove a point, they bash you over the head with it. There is no subtlety or smoothness. No critical thinking is involved. Personally, I don’t find this to be the case with Phineas and Ferb. They’re not trying to prove a point; they’re just telling amusing stories about two brothers and their adventures.

However, that doesn’t mean that these stories are devoid of value and content. Here are the four main take-aways that I have from the episodes that I have watched.

1. Rarely should you start your day off with a plan.

Instead, wake up and start experiencing your day. Be mindful and present in your daily journey. When you feel like there’s something you want to do, do it! This is your “I know what we’re gonna do today” moment. Even if it’s not something that can be done quickly, start the process and keep working on your new project.

2. Once you have something you want to do, ask friends to work with you.

In my opinion, everything in life is more fun with friends. Plus, you will find that your friends have entirely different skills than you, making your task easier to accomplish.

3. Don’t be afraid of changing paths.

Sometimes doing one thing leads you to doing something else. At this point, you may decide that doing the second thing is more important than the first. That’s okay. Go with it!

4. If everything seems to fall apart, well, that’s okay, too.

Some days are just going to go that way. It helps you enjoy the really successful days that much more when you can contrast them to days when you struggled.

Truly, a great way to find happiness is to make the most out of each day. That will mean different things on different days, but respect the process and enjoy the experience each day. So, what are you gonna do today?
