Cervical Spine Rehabilitation Video

Sarah StockettJune 30, I broke my neck. I spent 3 months in a cervical collar, immobilizing my cervical spine. September 27, my doctor told me that the break had healed enough that I could phase out wearing my cervical collar. Naturally, when not wearing the collar, I should strengthen my neck muscles and do some cervical spine rehabilitation.

We were all set to leave, so I asked him for a script for physical therapy. “I don’t prescribe physical therapy for people in your situation.” Even though I have no idea what he meant by “in your situation,” I think this is a mistake.

Maybe it’s because of my background, but I think physical therapists are extremely valuable. A good PT can give you exercises to correct your issue and make sure that your body does the exercises correctly. If something goes wrong, they have modifications and an idea of the muscles that need work. The whole point of physical therapy is to get your body to function correctly so that you’re not in pain.

So, when the doctor told me he wouldn’t prescribe physical therapy, I was frustrated. It is so much more challenging to have to try to assess whether you’re doing an exercise correctly by yourself. Fortunately, my background in therapy and exercises for rehabilitation allows me to create my own program.

This video does not replace physical therapy. If you have a script for physical therapy, you should use it. These exercises are appropriate for people who have been cleared from physical therapy or for those who didn’t receive a script for physical therapy. If this is your situation, I hope these exercises and stretches help you regain mobility and advance down the road of recovery.

Wonderful point, Tom! Massage is very beneficial to the rehabilitation process. Especially if you don’t have a physical therapist, you should find a good massage therapist.
