June 21, 2018 is International Yoga Day! Some of you might already have plans for how you’re going to celebrate today but, just in case you don’t, here are some ideas. Keep in mind that you don’t have to practice yoga to celebrate. Here are 5 ways you can celebrate Yoga Day.
5 Ways to Celebrate Yoga Day
1. Practice Gratitude.
Some people may not realize that gratitude is a large part of yoga. As we open our chests forward in heart-opening poses (back bends like Cobra pose and Bridge pose), we are allowing our bodies to express gratitude and give thanks. If you’re not feeling like a physical practice today, simply take time to think about and appreciate what you’re grateful for.
2. Read about Yoga.
Information about yoga is all over the place! You can read posts on websites (like this one), how-to books, philosophical books, historical books, or spiritual books. To create a deeper understanding of yoga, you should read the Bhagavad Gita or the Yamas and Niyamas.
3. Slow Down, Practice Your Breathing, and/or Meditate.
There are 8 limbs of yoga. Breathing is one of the limbs. Western culture doesn’t quite value breathing the way other cultures do, but it is very important in the practice of yoga. Today is a great day to learn about one of the many yogic breathing techniques and practice it. Here are just a few you could try:
- Antara Kumbhaka
- Bayha Kumbhaka
- Viloma Breathing
- Ujjayi Breathing
- Metered Breathing
- Bhastrika Breath
- Nadi Shodhana
4. Try Pilates or Other Activities Influenced by Yoga.

5. Take Care of Yourself.
Any time you eat healthy food, take time for yourself, give yourself a break, exercise or do something nice for yourself; you are taking care of yourself. Today is a great day for self-care. Take some time to do something to improve your physical or mental health.
