What you may not realize is that your brain is actually made up of 73% water! That is part of why even mild dehydration can affect your moods and ability to focus. Other surprising symptoms of mild dehydration include fatigue and headaches, according to WebMD. This can then become a downward spiral, the more often you are even slightly dehydrated, the less likely you are to feel up to exercising and making the other hard healthy choices. The less you exercise, the worse you feel and the less you want to do! Take charge and make yourself feel better. Water is brain food!  Who knew??

2. It keeps your lungs healthy.

How about the fact that that your lungs are made up of approximately 83% water?  Did you know that dehydration can cause difficulty breathing?  They even are currently looking at a possible connection between chronic dehydration and asthma.  Can you imagine how this can affect your workouts and your day-to-day energy levels?  Seriously, don’t sabotage yourself like that.

3. It keeps your spine healthy.

Water is important to spine health because it is helps to keep spinal disks in good shape.  An active lifestyle is important to health, even if you aren’t a 5-a-week-workout kind of person.  Simply moving your body is huge!  Take a walk, play ball with the kids or take the stairs instead of the elevator.  All of these things are simple ways to get more movement into your life, but if they bother your back you are less likely to do it!

4. It keeps your intestines healthy.

Keep those bowels moving!  Water helps to keep things moving through with regularity and helps keep your bowels smooth and flexible.  If you are dehydrated your intestines will pull even more water out of your stools making them hard to pass.  Chronic constipation can be a miserable condition causing stomach pains and serious bloating.

How Do You Get Enough Water?


So now you know! Water is more important than you thought. The real question is:  how do you make sure you get enough?

  • Find a good 40 oz water bottle (I use this one) and aim to empty it 2-3 times a day. Having a specific bottle you are working with is an easy way to track where you are on your intake.
  • You can also use an app for that! Check out Daily Water Free to track your water intake and even get reminders!
  • If you don’t like plain water, try adding some flavor to it. You can also use herbal teas or flavor drops to make it more palatable. Be careful when you chose flavoring though, some are loaded with artificial sweeteners or lots of extra calories. There are some good choices out there, so be sure to read the labels!

Whatever it takes for you, find a system and use it.  You deserve the best health you can get, and water plays a very important role!
